Guatemala
is the largest country in central America and home of the historic
Mayan civilization.
Today, those Mayan
ruins are a major tourist attraction. The year round climate is
moderately warm in the lowlands and coastal regions. Temperatures
drop in the highlands. Guatemala City is
the capital.
The
official language is Spanish
and the currency is the Quetzal.
The total population (1999 estimate)
was 12 million, with approximately 248 people per square mile. Besides
tourism, exports of coffee, beef, bananas and sugar are the major
revenue producers. |
